There are no sharks in Hvar. You can dive and swim in peace.

Are There Sharks Around Hvar, Hvar?

Also no. The channels are too shallow that allow for the ecosystem to support bigger marine predators. Hvar and the channel towards Vis island (the island located to the south)[add hyper link to Vis island]. Whilst the channel is deep, it only reaches 150 metres. Combine this with heavy ship traffic, bigger fish tend to avoid populated shallow areas along with their prey.

Are There Dangerous Fish in Croatia?

Yes, there are sharks and barracuddas in Croatia. The last shark attack that happened in Croatia was in 2008 off of Vis Island [link to Vis] whilst someone was spear fishing. Their calf was bitten but they made it away with only a new scar. The reason was the spear fisher kept their caught fish on the belt instead of a trailing bag. The shark mistook their leg for a fish and had a bite.

The last fatal shark attack happened over 50 years ago off Omis in 1974. Due to increased ship traffic, over fishing of the smaller fish and fishing of sharks, their current preffered home is the Adriatic channel 50 nautical miles off the coast of Vis (for context Vis is 30 Nautical miles away from Hvar).

But There Have Been Shark Sightings in Croatia?

In Hvar or Vis, there have been no sharks spotted in a while. Sharks are often spotted swimming along in the waters of other Croatian towns but they steer clear of people and are often too small to attack a human unless aggravated.

Is It Safe To Swim and Dive in Hvar?

Extremely safe. The main thing to watch out for is for sea urchins[link here] and if you are swimming, do not wear silver that might glint in the waters that may look like a fish in distress.

If spear fishing, always remember to have a trail bag to put your fresh catches in so if the blood does tingle any sharks sense, it will go for the bag and not you. But this is only for Vis and not Hvar.

This means Hvar is the perfect get away with the sea and safety.
